A Beautiful place to enjoy the sunset. A perfect time for spending the evenings. It is situated near St. Angelo’s Fort, Kannur. The name of the
place is ayikkara. To reach here, you have to pass the quarters gate just before reaching the fort entrance. The gate is at the left side of the road. The place is so awesome with both sides filled with sea water. You can see kannur city and kannur fort from the end point. There is also a harbour in Aayikara town. Note: The harbour gate will be clossed by 6 pm. Pedestrians are allowed.
Mappila Bay is a natural harbor situated in Ayikkara near Kannur town. On one side of the bay is Fort St. Angelo, built by the Portuguese in the 15th century and the other side is the Arakkal Palace.Boating within the bay area is pleasant. However, if you are venturing away from the bay to inner sea, make sure the weather conditions will stay favorable. The placid coastal waters of the region can suddenly turn violent if weather conditions deteriorate. In its great past, Mopila bay served as a port. For several centuries it linked Malabar to foreign countries. Today hectic activity of a thriving fishing harbour has taken over the coastal spot. Other than that this place is also good for picnics and as a watch point from where you can enjoy awesome views.
Chirakkal Folklore Museum or Kerala Folklore Akademi Museum adjacent to Chirakkal chira, was established to protect and preserve the folk culture and heritage of Kerala.
Chirakkal Chira is a beautiful pond situated at Chirakkal village, 6 kms north of Kannur. Spread over an area of about 15 acres, it is the largest artificial pond in Kerala. It was built by Chirakkal rulers over 350 years ago, and is a testament to the vision and intelligence of the rulers of a bygone era. There are three branches of the Chirakkal family, and their kovilakams [palaces] are situated on the three sides of the pond. The Chirakkal dynasty is believed to be the descendants of Mooshaka kingdom, who ruled from the 5th to the 8th century. Kolathiri was the dynasty formed out of the Mooshaka kingdom and by the 18th century, the name Kolathiri was forgotten and Chirakkal became prominent.
